Sheryn Omeri scheduled to speak at IBA Conference in Sydney – Race and Refugee Issues in Australia: are policies of detention and separation working?



Sheryn Omeri (also a tenant at Cloisters Chambers, London) will be speaking at the International Bar Association (IBA) Annual Conference in Sydney next month. Sheryn was invited by the IBA’s Human Rights Institute, co-chaired by retired UN Ambassador Hans Corell and vice-chaired by former Australian High Court judge, Michael Kirby. Sheryn will join a panel of distinguished speakers including the first Indigenous CEO of NSW Legal Aid, Brendan Thomas and Melbourne-based human rights barrister, Julian Burnside QC which will address the subject Race and Refugee Issues in Australia: are policies of detention and separation working? Sheryn will speak about her policy and in-court advocacy work for the Aboriginal Legal Service as well as broader themes concerning Indigenous imprisonment.
