Alister has a broad practice with a particular focus on professional liability claims and class actions involving investors and consumers.
He practices regularly in the Supreme Court of NSW and Federal Court and, as a senior junior counsel, often appears against senior counsel.
Alister’s principal practice areas are professional liability; class actions for investors and consumers; corporations and financial services; directors’ duties and insolvency; commercial and equity; and commissions of inquiry.
Alister is co-author of ‘Professional Liability in Australia’ (3rd ed 2016), and edited the ‘Members’ rights and remedies’ in the Australian Corporations Law looseleaf service (2000-2011). He has authored many other articles and presented at many seminars on topics related to his areas of practice.
Since 2001, Alister has also been a Naval Reservist and member of the NSW Navy Legal Panel. In that capacity he has acted for defence members in disciplinary proceedings and commissions of inquiry.
From 2005 to 2009, Alister was a member of a NSW Bar Association Professional Conduct Committee.
Since 2015, Alister has been a casual lecturer at the University of Sydney’s Foundations of Law course.
