Overview

Harrison specialises in the areas of commercial law, property law, planning and environmental law, public law, and professional negligence.  He regularly appears, led and unled, in the NSW Court of Appeal, Supreme Court, and Land and Environment Court.

Some of his recent appellate cases include Lahoud v Willoughby Council [2024] HCASL 287 (led by B Walker SC), Lahoud v Willoughby Council [2024] NSWCA 163 (led by A Galasso SC), Narraport Woollahra Holdings Pty Ltd v Ice Box Liquor Pty Ltd [2024] NSWCATAP 240 (led by J Emmett SC), Ausbao (286 Sussex Street) Pty Ltd v Registrar General of NSW [2023] NSWCA 18 (led by G Sirtes SC) and Lahoud v Willoughby Council [2022] NSWCA 214 (unled).

Harrison is often briefed to advise and appear in complex commercial and property disputes.  He has acted for clients such as Telstra, Lendlease, Sydney Metro (Jain v Sydney Metro [2024] NSWSC 387 (unled)), the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust, Orica Australia, Growthbuilt and SHOKAI Ausbao: Ausbao (286 Sussex Street) Pty Ltd v The Registrar-General of NSW [2021] NSWSC 1651 (led by G Sirtes SC).

Harrison is recognised for his experience and expertise in the Land and Environment Court’s administrative law (Class 4) jurisdiction (e.g., Australian Unity Funds Management Ltd v Boston Nepean Pty Ltd [2023] NSWLEC 49 (led by A Galasso SC)), compulsory acquisition (Class 3) jurisdiction (e.g., Dibb v Transport for NSW [2023] NSWLEC 114) and development appeals (Class 1) jurisdiction: see, e.g., Bureau SRH Pty Ltd v Woollahra Municipal Council [2024] NSWLEC 1677 (led by A Galasso SC); Amplitel Pty Limited v The Hills Shire Council [2024] NSWLEC 1787 (unled).  He is also a member of the NSW Bar Association’s Climate Change Committee.

His practice also involves regulatory, administrative law and judicial review matters for applicants (e.g., Commissioner of the AFP v HWCJ GLB Pty Ltd (No 2) [2024] NSWSC 482 (led by J Giles SC)) and government clients: e.g., Liverpool City Council v Minister for Local Government and Ors [2024] NSWLEC 94 (led by TF Robertson SC) and Secretary, Department of Health v Peptide Clinics Australia Pty Ltd [2019] FCA 1107 (led by N Sharp SC).

Due to the breadth of his practice, Harrison is also often engaged to advise and appear in professional negligence causes for and against legal practitioners: e.g., Johnson v Firth [2021] NSWCA 237 (led by W Fitzsimmons SC) and Bartier Perry Pty Ltd v Paltos [2021] NSWCA 158 (led by J Emmett SC).

Before coming to the Bar in 2016, Harrison worked in international arbitration in Singapore for Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (focusing primarily upon investor-state and treaty disputes) and in Paris for Allen & Overy (on large-scale commercial claims). He was Tipstaff to the Honourable Justice R I Barrett of the New South Wales Court of Appeal. He was also a contributor to Robson’s Annotated Corporations Legislation.

Harrison holds a Juris Doctor (Dist) and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons I) from the University of Sydney. He taught Civil and Criminal Procedure at Sydney Law School and worked there as a researcher. He studied on exchange at Sciences Po, Paris (a prestigious political sciences university in France) and speaks French. He is also an avid surfer.
