Stephen Thomson
Stephen Thomson is a barrister with a broad commercial practice, specialising in complex litigation and class actions.
He is regularly briefed to act in large-scale commercial disputes, often with cross-border elements, encompassing financial services, insurance, corporate, insolvency, and competition and consumer law, across sectors such as automotive, mining, and finance.
Unled appearances are a significant part of his practice; he has appeared both led and unled in the Federal Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of New South Wales, and various other State and Federal courts and tribunals.
Prior to joining the Bar, Stephen was a Senior Associate in the Dispute Resolution team at Herbert Smith Freehills in Sydney and London. He has over a decade of experience in complex, high-profile litigation before superior courts and tribunals in Australia and the United Kingdom.
In 2015, he served as Tipstaff to the Hon Justice Slattery in the Equity Division of the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
Stephen holds a Bachelor of Laws (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Arts in Politics from the University of Otago, New Zealand, where he graduated first in his class. He is admitted to practise in Australia and New Zealand and accepts briefs in all areas of law.
